![]() Figure 2: The superior pharyngeal constrictor (11) was located by following the base of the mandible posteriorly to the pharyngeal wall. The pharyngeal branch of the vagus nerve via the pharyngeal plexus supplies the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle. For these particular cases, the superior shadow was chosen as it offered a better representation of the superior pharyngeal constrictor function. The constrictors contract upon the bolus and transmit it down inside the esophagus. The superior branches of the IX and X nerves contributed innervation to the palatoglossus, whereas their middle branches innervated the palatopharyngeus. Immediately, the bolus of food is attached in the pharynx: The pharyngeal plexus was divided into two parts, a superior innervating the palatal and neighboring muscles and an inferior innervating pharyngeal constrictors. The stylopharyngeus muscle separated its lower margin from the middle constrictor. In 10 cats, a high-compliance balloon attached to a pressure transducer was partially inflated to just occlude the pharyngeal airway. Bipolar hooked-wire electrodes were used. The mechanical effects of pharyngeal constrictor (PC) muscle activation on pharyngeal airway function were determined in 20 decerebrate, tracheotomized cats. ![]()
